Step 7 - Income Assistance

Have you completed the Disability Assessment?

You answered "no".

Here is the information you will need to complete the Disability Assessment

As a person with a disability, you may be eligible to receive a disability allowance in addition to the Income Assistance. To apply for disability allowance, you will need to complete the Disability Assessment.

You will complete the first section of the document, which asks for your basic information and your consent to have the information in the form released to the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE).

The rest of the form will be completed by a health professional. The health professional must fax the form directly to your local Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) Centre. If you have a short-term disability, you are not eligible for the Disability Allowance.

Receiving Support While Waiting for the Disability Assessment

While you and your health professional are completing the Disability Assessment, you can start receiving Income Assistance without the disability allowance. Payments can made in a number of ways including:

  • Cheque
  • Direct deposit to your bank account
  • Direct payment to landlord or utilities

Important information about benefits for Indigenous Peoples

If you are Indigenous there are many things that affect the benefits you can get and the dollar amounts you can get from them. These include the agreements your band or governing body has with provincial, territorial, and federal governments. Before applying to any benefits, you should speak with your governing body, if applicable.

AFOA Canada and Prosper Canada are currently seeking funding to develop an online tool that serves the needs of Indigenous people living in Canada.
